The article examines how PFAS—the so-called "forever chemicals"—enter the atmosphere through semiconductor manufacturing, electronic waste, and increasingly through PFAS-based immersion cooling systems used to reduce data centres' water consumption. It highlights the difficulty scientists face in tracing and regulating these airborne emissions compared with well-documented water and soil contamination. Brian notes that public and regulatory attention has focused almost entirely on PFAS in water, with little awareness of the gaseous and particulate forms of these chemicals, even as momentum builds around greenhouse gas regulation more broadly.
